Disadvantages of Old Age Homes

There is an increase in old age homes in Bangalore. In economic terms one would say that “supply increases as the demand increases”. Most of the old age homes that come to existence, now a days, do not rise with the motive of looking after the well being of the neglected elderly; but comes to existence mainly because of their interest in the foreign money that would pour into their trust. The above said statement should not lead to any form of generalization as there are organizations whose sole interest is to look after the needs of the neglected elderly. Having said the motives of the organizations, one has to know that it (either of the motives) doesn’t change the problems (emotional or others) faced by the elderly in the old age homes. A few are listed below. If you feel there are more, please do add them in the form of comments.

1.The person who has been put into an old age home would (naturally) be very sad. This is quite justified since they are (usually) leaving the only home they have known for years -- including all the memories.

2. Most of the people who are put into the old age home, start developing a fear that rises from the thought that moving into an old age home is the final step before death. This is usually true since once there, they usually do not return to their own home.

3. Loneliness is a enduring problem with many. For some visits from their loved ones are few and far in-between.

4.Once in a old age home, they tend to lose their independence. This in itself gives the feeling that their life is over. Along with loss of independence, they lose their self-esteem too. Now, anything they do is part of a planned activity.

5. In case they are religious, they can no longer go and pray to a place of worship of their choice; but instead attend the service provided by the retirement home.

  1. Yes.. And there is no denying the contribution of these homes themselves to the whole mess. They do nothing to ensure the residents' well-being. None of the funds is utilized properly. All the inflow of money goes into the hands of the owners because the trust is managed by their own family members. Its just become a money-making racket.

  2. On the Flip-side, there are cases when the elderly are very happy at the old age homes. At home they have to stay all alone and wait till their children return home from work. But at the old age homes, there are people of their own age and hence they find solace in company. What is your take on this?

  3. In some cases I have come across, they love being in company with like minded peopke going through same life stage awaiting death and accepting their end. Many counsellors ate hired these days to talj to them, help them understand death and dying, involve them in group therapy and provide the the listening ear to them. Looking at it from this side it just helps them cope well which probably wad not possible intheir in their house

  4. Why is it that the children find it so hard to take care their own parents who have brought them up with so much difficulties all through their life.... If are sending the parents to the old age home just for the sake of our privacy then we are really not doing any justice for them at all.....

  5. It is shocking to hear that the children find It difficult to look after their own parents and refuse to look after them. even I have read about the up comings of many old age homes, there should be some rules implemented by the government , that parents need to be taken care of till their death or else it is punishable

  6. once i went an old age home people who is staying there are from high financial background. they are sharing their thought with me that they struggled a lot to make their children in a good position. when the children achieved high position in the life they find that their parents are burden for them. so they send their parents to the old age home. people who are doing such activities just think that whatever you achieved in your life if there is no blessing from the god as well as from the parents; you are not gaining anything in your life. also you should answer for these activity in front of god.

  7. The reality of sending the parents to the old age homes are because the children in these days think that their parents cannot match their status but they should think of one most important thing that the parents are the one who bought them the status and the position that they have in their life....

  8. working in america has given me a feeling that children dont care much of their parents when they grow old due to the reason that as people grow older they become like little children and are very hard to manage. i do feel sorry for those people coz even when they are sick noone turns to even look at them. their only family will be those of us who take care of them. its so sad to see how hardened the minds of some people are.

  9. there are pros and cons in having the old age homes. It all depends on how well it is managed. Elderly homes helps older age people to have immediate access to medical facilities as well as nursing care.

  10. These type of conflicts take a heavy toll on everybody in the family. There are no easy solutions and ready-made answers and probably, on balance, wisdom should dawn on elders that the old order is changing and that it has to yield place to the new.

Then there are old and healthy parents who visit their children settled in America or England regularly. This is a mutually satisfying situation as the parents are able to maintain an emotional link with children and grandchildren till they become too old to bear the travails of travel.
